Prime Carbon is the operational entity in the Carbon Townsville Community Cluster. The Carbon Townsville Community Cluster comprises a group of like minded entities and individuals who believe that by collaborating, the Townsville Community:
- can make a real difference in the abatement and offsetting of carbon emissions;
- has the potential to act as a hub for carbon trading for all of Australia; and
- can become known as “Carbon City” due to Townsville being internationally recognised as a leader in the move to a low carbon economy.
The group includes representatives from various local governments, Prime Carbon Pty Ltd, Townsville Enterprise Limited, James Cook University, Government Owned Entities, the Townsville Community and other interested large and small businesses.
A tangible benefit to the Community results from Prime Carbon donating 5 cents from every carbon credit sold to the “Carbon Townsville Sustainability Benefit Fund”. The Carbon Townsville Sustainability Benefit Fund is a fund that supports: research, education and initiatives relating to the abatement or offsetting of carbon. These include but are not limited to: energy efficiency, renewable energy, biofuels and demand side management.
National benefits
On a National scale this program has the potential to generate sufficient carbon credits to meet a considerable portion of the needs of liable Australian companies. In addition, forecasts indicate that there will be excess credits available for export to the international market.
